Wigan Athletic: Talks with preferred buyer collapses

Talks with the ‘preferred bidder’ in relation to the takeover of Wigan Athletic have broken down, three days after they were chosen by the joint administrators.

The Lactics entered administration at the beginning of the month and were deducted 12 points, subsequently relegating them from the Championship.

Administrator Gerald Krasner had given the buyer until 12:00 on Thursday to sign a letter confirming their lawyers have the suitable funds to buy and run the club.

After talks between the two collapsed on 24th July, Krasner says they are holding discussions with five other interested parties.

The joint administrators released a statement saying that they will proceed “with a view to progressing a sale over the course of the weekend”.

They added: “Until either the bidder themselves, or the Football League (EFL) elects to announce the identity of the party that is now in exclusive process to acquire the club and its assets, that will remain confidential”.

In the meantime, Wigan’s appeal against the points deduction will take place on 31st July. It was cost up to £500,000 as the club still has to pay the English Football League’s fees.
