Sam Nicholson Joins The Gas

Bristol Rovers have signed Scottish winger Sam Nicholson after he left Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids earlier in July.

The 25-year-old former Hearts of Midlothian player has penned a two-year deal with the League One side, as they look to improve upon their 14th place finish in the 2019/20 season.

“Sam is a great dribbler who can both create and score goals,” said Pirates boss Ben Garner. “He’s a dynamic player who can play on either side of the pitch & is very versatile. He’s got a great mixture of experience, having played at the highest level in Scotland and also in America. We hope he can have a big impact.”

Nicholson is the fourth acquisition in a busy summer window so far for the Gas. He joins defender/defensive midfielder Josh Grant and centre backs Jack Baldwin and Max Ehmer at the Memorial Stadium.

He began his career at boyhood club Hearts, playing over 100 games for the Edinburgh-based side and scored 13 goals. He decided to take on a new challenge in 2017 and signed for MLS side Minnesota United, where he made 20 appearances and scored twice.

He was traded to Colorado Rapids in July 2018 and racked up 48 appearances in his two-year spell with the Rapids, before his contract was terminated by mutual consent earlier this month.
