Aitor Karanka makes managerial return with Blues

Birmingham City have appointed their new head coach in Aitor Karanka.

Karanka’s last managerial job was at Nottingham Forest, where he had a year-long spell before he was released from his contract in January 2019.

Prior to his time at Forest, he led Middlesbrough to promotion to the Premier League in the 2015/16 season, whilst having a 47% win record.

The 46-year-old has succeeded fellow Spaniard Pep Clotet at St Andrews, after he left the club with four games remaining.

Birmingham finished in 20th last season, just two points above the relegation zone, having not won any of their last 14 games.

Karanka told the club website: “I’m delighted to be joining a club with the history and fanbase that Birmingham City has.

“I share the excitement and determination of everyone here to start working together on all the challenges that lie ahead.”

In spite of the poor off-the-field matters currently going on at the club, Karanka’s transfer budget could well be boosted following the sale of teenager Jude Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund, for a fee that is said to be around £30 million.
