Jonny Williams extends his stay at Charlton

Attacking midfielder Jonny Williams has triggered an extension in his contract at Charlton Athletic, which keeps him at the club until 2021.

The Addicks were relegated from the Championship this season in 22nd, just one point from safety.

Williams grabbed five assists for the club this season and played a pivotal part in their impressive start to the season which saw them sit in second place after the month of August having gone unbeaten.

“I’m delighted to be staying,” said Williams.

“I’ve loved my time at Charlton, I feel at home here and I’m looking forward to, hopefully, having a good season next year and doing what we can to get the team back to the Championship.

“Throughout the club, the players, the coaches, the staff behind the scene – It’s the culture of the club. Everyone gets on with everyone, and you can’t always say that in a football club. I’d never had that before.

“The players are true friends and real good people. That makes a big difference. That sort of thing will show on the pitch – you have players that will fight for each other and put their bodies on the line and that’s part of why we won promotion last time.

“The fans have been great since day one and have always supported me throughout my time here and that means a lot. I just hope I can repay them next year with some good performances and being part of a winning team from the get-go.”

A product of the Crystal Palace academy, Williams played 70 matches for the Eagles in the Championship and the Premier League, but only managed one goal.

He enjoyed many loans spells out the second tier, including three spells with Ipswich Town and also featured for Nottingham Forest, Milton Keynes Dons and Sunderland, before joining Charlton on a six-month contract in January 2018. He extended his stay at the club for the 2019/20 season, where he made 27 appearances for the Addicks.
